Donauschwaben in the Military Border Region

Geography of the Region

The Austro-Hungarian Military Border region was a part of the Habsburg Empire comprising 33,422 square kilometers and extending as a narrow strip of land from the Adriatic Sea all the way to Northern Transylvania along over 1500 kilometers of border with the Ottoman Empire. The settlers of the Military Border region in the Banat, Batschka and Syrmia provided soldiers for regiments to guard the border; support of the regiments, either as military service or in military support and supply roles, was required of settlers to this region.

History of the Region

The Border Region was organized under strict military rules. The sectors were as follows, along with indications of their founding and ending dates.
