CHARACTERISTICS AND PHYSICAL SIZE
The origins of Austrian military archival affairs date back to the
year 1711, when through the initiative of the former president of
the Imperial Aulic War Council Prince Eugene of Savoy, the
Aulic War Council Chancellery's Archive was
established. But only in 1801 were the actual Imperial-Royal
War Archives founded on the initiative of Archduke Charles of
Austria. In the course of the 19th century this institution became
the central military archives of the Habsburg Monarchy and a center
for military historical research. Today the archives has in its
custody the holdings of the central military offices, the
territorial authorities and the field chancelleries of the Imperial
(&) Royal Army. Additionally it holds the archives of the
Imperial (&) Royal Navy and famous collections of maps, plans
and pictures. Thus the War Archives offers a single source for the
history of most European states and of many overseas territories.
The Archives holds about 40 linear kilometers (roughly 25 miles)
of records including more than 240,000 archival units
(boxes/facsimiles/books), more than 416,000 maps and plans, as well
as about 300,000 pictures.

PRACTICAL HINTS FOR USERS AND CLIENTS
In principle, all records more than thirty years old are available
to the public, so long as they do not fall under the provisions of
the Information Protection Act or the Personal Information Act. A
printed inventory, and help guides concerning the various record
groups are available in the research room. Because of the
organizational procedures, archival documents are not available for
use until 24 hours after being ordered. Records can used
exclusively in the central research room of the Austrian State
Archives (Ext. 504).
Initial information will be given by the archives' directorate.
If not too time-consuming, written inquiries will be answered
without charge by the archive advisors. Photocopies, photographs,
readerprints and microfilms can be ordered for a charge.
